Ellis Elementary was named after Suella Gilbert Ellis, who was the first African-American administrator in Prince William County. The school opened in the fall of 2004 and grew in enrollment from 525 students to 750 by the first school year's end. Boundary changes adjusted the enrollment for future years.

The school's vision is to be a community of constructivists who are responsible, lifelong learners with high expectations for all.
